"Personification of Depression."
24 x 24 inches. Oil Paint on Canvas. 2018
This is a painting of a personification of depression. While creating this creature, I interviewed people with depression and then researched animal aspects that best fit the symptoms of depression that I wanted to show in the physical attributes. I chose the face of a Tarzier (an Australian nocturnal marsupial) to represent anxiety. I then incorporated the fat rolls of a blob fish to show the excessive weight gain, weight loss, and lack of appetite that is associated with this mental illness. I then included the claws of a sloth to show apathy and lethargy which are common symptoms. Finally, I included the tail of a opossum to show how this disorder will grab on to the person it affects and it is difficult to get it to let go.
